The Sacred Well of Santa Cristina, located near Paulilatino in central Sardinia, is one of the most extraordinary examples of Nuragic sacred architecture and ancient astronomical knowledge in the Mediterranean.
Built around the 12th–11th century BC, this perfectly preserved stone structure was dedicated to water rituals and celestial observation. Its precision reveals a deep understanding of the relationship between Earth, Sun, and sky.
Twice a year, during the spring and autumn equinoxes, a remarkable phenomenon occurs inside the well.
On these days, the Sun’s rays enter directly to the well. The light travels down the stone staircase and illuminates the water at the bottom of the well, creating a powerful and symbolic visual effect.
This alignment happens this year 2026:
- Around March 20 (Spring Equinox)
- Around September 22–23 (Autumn Equinox)
The effect is usually visible around midday, and can be observed for a few days before and after the exact equinox date.
